The work is inspired by a set of photographs taken in an elementary school in the 1940s. Hundreds gathered on the school field, wearing identical uniforms, standing with one leg and arms raised in precise alignment. Echoing my childhood impression, this image of elementary school kids doing the morning exercise is familiar to all Taiwanese. However, originally for physical fitness, the morning exercise falls into being a ridiculous show under military intention. To reinterpret this distressing disciplinary activity, I transform the people into descending birds, deliberately blurring the figures. Suspended in midair, murky balls stretch out to form the shape of birds, with faces of the school teachers and students attached. In the wind, they collide and create clinking sounds — like the spirits’ murmur.
